Saturday July 6th 2013 marked a black-day in the history of 40 years of the 370 mtr. long Maadi Bridge popularly known as ‘China Pul(Bridge)’ near Damauli, Tanahun. At around 5:30 p.m, a minibus with number plate Na.4.Kha. 4684 heading towards Mugling from Pokhara plunged into Maadi river from the height of 25 mtr. Maadi Bridge leaving 11 passengers dead on the spot, several missing and 10 injured rescued.
As soon as the accident happened the news spread like viral and in a few moment the bridge and the Prithvi Highway were all crowded by the number of people from the near by places in disbelief and the Highway was also blocked for about 4 hrs. The scene was horrific. The bus had skidded off the bridge breaking those strong railings to 25 mtr. down below to the Maadi river. Looking at the breakages of the railings it seems the bus must be in very high speed. It seems the driver had gone blank at that moment and instead of pushing brakes he must have pushed accelerator.
As told by the bystanders who saw it happened, “A small child trying to cross the road led this cruel incident. As the bus was coming near, a child ran across the road where bus-driver diverted to save him in which he succeeded but alas bus plunge from the bridge bringing out number of casualties.”
Thanks to the local people, near by Nepal Army barrack, Nepal Police and Nepal Armed Police for the quick rescue. As the exact number of the passenger is unknown the death toll could rise as the swollen river could have swept away. Under the leadership of Tanahun Chief District Officer Shankar Prasad Kharel the police personnel and entrepreneurs are mobilized for the missing ones in the possible places.
This tragic accident has left the people of Damauli and near by places as well as whole Tanahun in deep grievance.
